Werner E. Batke
Born in Germany, Werner already started drawing as a pre-schooler copying horses out of magazines and catalogues. After school he would spend hours exploring his native woods, (worrying his parents countless times) discovering a whole new world and a passion for the outdoors and wildlife that has lasted to this day.
As early as grade four, his water color paintings of animals surpassed those of his art teachers, who recognized his talent and encouraged him to continue studying the arts. However, a formal education in the arts was out of the question as his parents insisted that he pursue a "proper" apprenticeship as a tool and die maker and machinist.
After his mandatory time in the Navy, his thirst for more adventure brought him to Canada and his life changed dramatically. He met and fell in love with his wife Karin and in 1974, at the age of twenty four, emigrated to Manitoba.
For the first few years he continued to work in his trade, but soon after emigrating Werner started to explore Canada's vast wilderness and began to pursue his passion for hunting, fishing and photography.
But he also enjoyed writing down his outdoor experiences and to promote Canada as a hunting, fishing and vacation destination to a wider audience. So began another career as a freelance writer and for many years his articles and photos were published in several European outdoor magazines.
As over time more local and European hunters were seeking his advice and assistance he eventually started his own guiding service.
As a guide and outfitter he worked in Manitoba, British Columbia, New Foundland and Wyoming (USA). His sketch book and camera were his constant companions.
Werner believes his best training as an artist comes from being in the outdoors and from studying the works of other wildlife artists.
His keen observation of birds and animals and his sharp eye for detail, are all reflected in his paintings.
Through his art, Werner endeavors to share the passion and respect he has for wildlife, the environment and the quality of wildlife habitat with the public and art community.
His art is popular with wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts in Canada, Europe and the U.S.A.
Recently retired, and with more time now for the arts, Werner and his wife live in the Arnes area, on Lake Winnipeg.
